Buying guide

How to choose a drinking fountain or bottle filler

A modern drinking fountain does two jobs: a quick drink from the bubbler and a fast, clean refill for reusable bottles. When you compare drinking fountains for sale, start with how the unit mounts, whether it needs to be ADA compliant, and whether the water should be filtered and chilled.

Drinking fountain, bottle filler or both?

A drinking fountain, or bubbler, is built for sipping. A bottle filling station has a tall dispensing area and a sensor that fills a bottle hands-free. A drinking fountain with bottle filler, like the Avalon A51, puts both in one wall-hung unit: a 15 inch bottle area on top and a bubbler below, each with its own touchless sensor.

In-wall, surface-mount, wall-hung or freestanding

In-wall bottle fillers such as the Avalon A50 recess into a wall cutout of about 14.4 x 23.8 inches for a flush look. The A50-SB puts the same filler in a stainless case that screws to the wall surface, so no cutout is needed. Wall-hung units like the A51 series hang on the wall with no cutout. The freestanding A52 stands on its own anywhere there is a water line and a drain, so it works in lobbies and gyms where a wall unit will not fit.

ADA compliant drinking fountains

Schools and public buildings usually need ADA compliant drinking fountains. In our lineup, the Avalon A51, A51-NF and A51-OFNC are ADA compliant. The A50 in-wall and surface-mount bottle fillers are not, so pair them with an ADA fountain or choose an A51 model. Send us your plan if you need help with mounting heights.

Filtered and chilled water

Most of our bottle fillers use NSF-certified dual stage filtration, with filters that last about 1,500 gallons or 6 months. For cold water, the A51 and A51-NF have a built-in chiller, the A50-C and A50-SB-C pair the filler with Avalon's A50-CC chiller for 46 to 54°F water, and the freestanding A52-C adds a chiller too. Built for schools, gyms and public spaces

Touchless sensors keep hands off shared surfaces and built-in drains keep the area dry. Several models add UV sanitizing, a WiFi app or a bottle counter that shows how many plastic bottles you have saved. Shop by setting: schools and universities, gyms and airports and public buildings.

Before you buy a drinking fountain

  1. Mounting

In-wall units need a wall cutout. Surface-mount and wall-hung units do not. Freestanding units need floor space.

  2. ADA

Schools and public buildings usually need at least one ADA compliant unit on each floor.

  3. Water, drain and power

Every unit needs a water line and a drain. Touchless and chilled units also need a nearby outlet.

  4. Chilled or room temp

Chilled water gets used more, and filtration keeps it tasting clean.

Drinking fountain and bottle filler questions

Contact us →
Do drinking fountains need a drain?
Yes. Every drinking fountain and bottle filler we sell needs a water supply line and a drain connection. Built-in drains catch overflow under the spout. The freestanding A52 needs a water line and a drain where it stands.
Are bottle fillers ADA compliant?
It depends on the model. The Avalon A51, A51-NF and A51-OFNC are ADA compliant. The A50 bottle fillers are not, so many buildings pair them with an ADA drinking fountain.
Can I add a bottle filler without opening the wall?
Yes. The surface-mount A50-SB screws to the wall with no cutout, and the wall-hung A51 series hangs on the wall. Both still need a water line and a drain behind them.
How often do bottle filler filters need changing?
On models with NSF-certified dual stage filtration, about every 1,500 gallons or 6 months. Find replacement filters and bottle filler accessories here.
Do you offer school and government pricing?
Yes. See school and district pricing, or send quantities through our project quote form. Tax-exempt organizations can contact us before ordering.
Do drinking fountains ship free?
Yes. Shipping is free on every drinking fountain and bottle filler, and most orders ship directly from the manufacturer's U.S. warehouse with tracking. We only collect sales tax on orders shipped to Georgia.
