Buying guide

How to choose a bottled water cooler

A bottled water cooler pours water from a standard 3 or 5 gallon jug, so it works anywhere you have an outlet, with no water line or plumbing. The big decision is where the jug goes: in the base or on top.

Bottom load vs. top load water cooler

A bottom load water cooler, like the Avalon A6, A3, A4 or A14, holds the jug in a cabinet at the base. You slide the bottle in at floor level and a pump draws the water up, so no one has to lift a heavy 5 gallon jug overhead. Most of our bottom load models also have an empty bottle light. A top load water cooler, like the A10 or A1, is the classic design: you flip the jug onto the top. Top load coolers cost less and have no pump, but lifting the jug is harder for some people.

Hot, cool and cold water

Most of our bottled coolers pour hot water at about 185°F and cold at about 47°F, and models like the A3, A4, A10 and A11 add a cool tap. The A14 lets you set hot water from 174 to 194°F and cold from 39 to 59°F. Most models have a child safety lock on the hot tap; check the product page if that matters for your home.

Self-cleaning and filtered options

Self-cleaning bottom load coolers help keep the tanks sanitary between cleanings: the A3 uses UV and the A14 uses ozone. The A3F is a filtered bottom load water cooler that comes with a 3 gallon bottle and NSF-certified dual stage filters, so you can refill the bottle at the tap instead of buying jugs.

Countertop and ice maker models

Short on floor space? The A1 and A11 come in countertop versions about 19 inches tall. Want ice too? The A20-B is a bottom load water cooler with a built-in ice maker that makes up to 22 lb of bullet ice a day. See countertop water coolers and ice makers. Tired of jugs altogether? Before you buy a bottled water cooler

  1. Jug size

All of our bottled coolers take standard 3 or 5 gallon jugs.

  2. Lifting

If lifting a full 5 gallon jug is a problem, choose a bottom load cooler.

  3. Space

Freestanding coolers are about 13 x 12 in and 40 to 41 in tall. Leave room behind for airflow.

  4. Temperatures

Hot and cold, a cool tap, or adjustable temperatures on the A14.

Contact us →
Is a bottom load water cooler better than a top load?
A bottom load cooler is easier to use because you slide the jug into the base instead of lifting it overhead, and most have an empty bottle light. A top load cooler costs less and has no pump. Both take standard 3 or 5 gallon jugs.
Do bottled water coolers need plumbing?
No. A bottled water cooler only needs a standard wall outlet. You supply the water in 3 or 5 gallon jugs.
Can I use tap water instead of buying jugs?
With the A3F, yes. It comes with a 3 gallon bottle and NSF-certified filters, so you can refill the bottle at the tap. A reusable water cooler jug works with the other models too, but they do not filter the water.
How often should I clean a bottled water cooler?
Clean and sanitize it every few months and whenever you notice taste or odor changes. Self-cleaning models help between cleanings, and a water cooler cleaning kit makes it easy.
Is there a bottled water cooler with an ice maker?
Yes. The Avalon A20-B is a bottom load water cooler with a built-in ice maker that makes up to 22 lb of bullet ice a day and pours hot, cool and cold water.
Do bottled water coolers ship free?
Yes. Shipping is free on every bottled water cooler, and most orders ship directly from the manufacturer's U.S. warehouse with tracking. We only collect sales tax on orders shipped to Georgia.
