Buying guide

How to choose a countertop water dispenser

A countertop water dispenser, also called a tabletop or desktop water dispenser, gives you cold and often hot water without giving up floor space. The main choice is where the water comes from: your water line, a jug, or a refillable tank.

Countertop bottleless water coolers

Countertop bottleless water coolers like the Avalon A8, B8, A9, A12 and A13CT connect to a cold water line and filter the water with NSF-certified dual stage filters. They stand about 19 inches tall on a 12 x 13 inch footprint and pour hot water at about 185°F and cold at about 47°F. The A9-1 lets you pick from three hot settings (158, 176 or 194°F) and three cold settings (37, 45 or 54°F), and the A13CT adds adjustable temperatures and UV self-cleaning.

Countertop top load water coolers

If there is no water line nearby, a countertop top load cooler like the A1 or A11 uses standard 3 or 5 gallon jugs and only needs an outlet. The jug sits upside down on top, so allow plenty of room above the cooler, and keep in mind you will need to lift the jug into place. See all bottled water coolers.

Countertop water filter dispensers

For filtered room temperature water, the A30 and A31 are compact countertop water filter dispensers about 5.5 inches wide. The A30 connects to a water line and needs no power. The A31 uses a 3.5 liter refillable tank and needs no plumbing. Both use NSF-certified dual stage filters with an LCD that counts down the days left on the filter.

Countertop hot and cold water dispenser safety

Most hot and cold countertop coolers here have a child safety lock on the hot tap, and several add leak detection and a nightlight. If you need more capacity and have the floor space, compare freestanding water coolers.

Before you buy a countertop water dispenser

  1. Clearance

Measure under your upper cabinets. Most countertop coolers are about 19 in tall, and top load models need extra room for the jug.

  2. Water source

Water line for bottleless, jugs for top load, or a refillable tank for the A31.

  3. Temperatures

Hot and cold, room temperature only, or adjustable settings.

  4. Counter depth

Most hot and cold models need about 13 in of depth plus room behind for airflow.

Contact us →
Will a countertop water cooler fit under my cabinets?
Most of our countertop hot and cold coolers are about 19 inches tall, which fits under standard upper cabinets on many counters. Top load models need extra height for the jug on top, so measure before you order.
Is there a countertop water dispenser that needs no plumbing?
Yes. The A31 uses a 3.5 liter refillable tank, and the A1 and A11 top load coolers use 3 or 5 gallon jugs. None of them need a water line.
Is there one that needs no electricity?
Yes. The A30 countertop filtered dispenser connects to a water line and needs no power. It pours filtered room temperature water.
Do countertop hot and cold water dispensers have a child lock?
Most of our hot and cold countertop coolers, including the A1, A8, B8, A9-1 and A13CT, have a child safety lock on the hot tap. Check the product page for the model you are considering.
How often do I change the filters?
Models with Avalon's NSF-certified dual stage filters need new filters about every 6 months. Top load coolers have no filter, but they should be cleaned regularly.
Do countertop water dispensers ship free?
Yes. Shipping is free on every countertop dispenser, and most orders ship directly from the manufacturer's U.S. warehouse with tracking. We only collect sales tax on orders shipped to Georgia.
