This category will fill in as approved equipment is added.

Frame-mounted and sit-down longarm machines, compared by workspace size, frame length, and automation so you can match the machine to your quilts and your room.

What to know before you buy

Longarm quilting equipment is easier to compare when you separate workspace size, frame length, automation, and room fit before you compare models.

Frame-mounted or sit-down

A frame-mounted longarm moves the machine head over a quilt that stays loaded on a frame. A sit-down longarm stays fixed on a table and you move the quilt, which suits studios without room for a frame and makers who prefer free motion and ruler work.

Workspace size

Workspace is the distance between the needle and the machine body. It sets how much of the quilt you can reach before repositioning. Eighteen to twenty inches covers throw quilts and smaller projects, while larger workspaces give you more room before you need to advance the quilt.

Automation

Hand-guided machines rely on your movement. Computer-guided systems stitch a chosen design across the quilt while you manage loading and thread. Automation changes workflow more than it changes who the machine is for.

How to choose

  • Measure the wall: a frame needs its full length plus about three feet of clearance at each end for loading and walking.
  • Match workspace to your largest regular quilt, not your largest ever quilt.
  • Decide whether you want to move the machine or the quilt before you compare prices.
  • Budget for a frame, a good chair or standing mat, and thread cones in the first purchase.
  • Ask what arrives assembled, what needs a second person, and whether the machine needs a dedicated circuit.

Compatibility notes

Frame length and carriage width vary by manufacturer, so a machine and frame are not always interchangeable. Confirm the frame is listed as compatible with the specific machine model before ordering, and check the table height for sit-down models against your chair.

When final supplier data is attached, each compatible frame, accessory, and required setup component should be shown on the product record before ordering is enabled.
